Oral Contraceptives as abortifacient

I recently started reading “Does the Birth Control Pill Cause Abortions?” by Randy Alcorn. I downloaded a free pdf version of the book from his website. I would post a link but I’m posting this from my phone (and I’m just not that sophisticted). Thus, you’ll have to google it.

I started the book thinking it was going to be a bunch of unsubstantiated assertions which would allow me to ignore it and get on with my life.

That has not been the case at all. After reading the first few chapters I decided to look up Desogen (for no reason other than it was easy to spell) and see what its product information stated which included the following:

“Combination oral contraceptives act by suppression of gonado-tropins. Although the primary mechanism of this action is inhibition of ovulation, other alterations include changes in the cervical mucus (which increase the difficulty of sperm entry into the uterus) and the endometrium (which reduce the likelihood of implantation).”

In their own words the makers of Desogen acknowledge that one of the ways it “prevents pregnancy” is not by preventing it at all. Instead of actually preventing pregnancy, after conception occurs the pill “reduce(s) the likelihood of implantation.”

In other words, one of the ways Desogen “prevents pregnancy” is to deliberately abort the newly created human being.

Small human being? Yes.

Unique human being? Yes.

Created by, and in the image of, God? Yes.

OK to destroy/kill? Absolutely not!

The information is readily available if you look for it. Don’t take my word for it. Check it out for yourself.

One can only imagine how many deaths have occurred in addition to those killed by traditional methods of abortion.

God help us all.

Slavery and embryonic stem cell research

The following was taken from the Case for Life by Scott Klusendorf:

Suppose a nineteenth-century medical school delivered this opinion on the issue of slavery: “We take no position on the morality of owning slaves. We are neutral. However, in our quest to cure many diseases, we fund many groups that conduct medical experiments on those African-American slaves scheduled for execution. Rest assured: We do not pay money for these groups to kill slaves. They must use private funds for that. We pay only for the beneficial research they conduct after the slave is killed. In fact, we think slaves deserve profound respect. However, they do no carry the same moral status as white people. Once the slaves are executed, it would be morally wrong to let all that tissue go to waste. Remember this: These slaves are going to die anyway, and we don’t pay people to kill them. We simply fund the research after the fact.”

He was pointing out the reprehensible nature of the March of Dime’s so-called neutrality regarding the killing of babies for research purposes.

UnPLANNED DVD Blog Tour

While I have not read the book UnPLANNED, I recently watched a review copy of the DVD. The product description at Amazon.com reads as follows:

Abby Johnson thought she was helping women in crisis. She was about to learn the truth . . . and facing the secrets of her own painful past would be the toughest truth of all. In this documentary based on the book Unplanned, learn how Abby Johnson went from Planned Parenthood clinic director to leading voice for life and women in crisis.

Abby is the main character of the story and it is, after all, her story. While I found her story interesting, and frustrating at times, what really gripped me was the perseverance of those in the pro-life community that continued to speak with and pray for her over a period of several years while she worked at Planned Parenthood. One lady even gave her flowers one day.

Those pro-lifers did not see any fruit from their work for years. Yet, they didn’t give up. I’m sure there were many frustrating times for them but they didn’t quit. As they were interviewed it was apparent they were gentle in their approach and full of joy. They genuinely loved Abby. This really convicted me of my own sin as I am too easily discouraged and irritated.

I was expecting the video to dive a little more into the debate over the life of the unborn but that was not to be. It wasn’t the purpose of the video. It was a documentary of Abby’s journey to the side of life.

If you’re looking for something on the bigger picture there are several books I could recommend.

If you are a pro-life worker in need of some encouragement, or know some laborers for life who need encouragement, I think this video could provide you with some needed balm. The video, while not perfect in my humble opinion, can also provide people with a glimpse of how pro-life ministry should be conducted.

Later this month Abby Johnson will be speaking for the Unite for Life Webcast. Following are details:

The Unite for LIFE webcast is a free webcast featuring Abby Johnson that will benefit pregnancy care organizations. You can sign up to participate on May 17 at 8:00 p.m. (in all time zones) at www.uniteforlifewebcast.org. Unplanned the book and the DVD will be available for purchase as a package deal and 33% of each purchase will go to crisis pregnancy centers like CareNet, the National Institute of Family & Life Advocates, and Heartbeat International.

The kind folks at Tyndale provided me with a copy of the DVD for review. Many thanks to them for what was an encouraging experience.
